Varna or ‘The Marine Capital of Bulgaria’ is the largest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Founded in the 6th century BC under the name Odessos, today Varna is a modern city that has a lot to offer. Whether you want to relax on the beach, go for a relaxed stroll on the promenade or see cultural monuments, this is the right place to be. The city is the perfect starting point for day trips to the towns of Nessebar and Balchik. Wine tasting and lunch at a mussel farm are among the highlights of this trip. ‘Dobre doshli v Bulgaria!’ (Welcome to Bulgaria!), greets you your local tour guide at Varna Airport. Short drive to Varna. Check-in at the hotel for 4 nights followed by a city tour including the Assumption of the Virgin Cathedral and the Roman Thermal Baths, which are among the best preserved in Europe. Finish your tour with a visit at the Archaeological Museum and admire the oldest so far discovered processed gold in the world (4600-4450 BC).
In the morning, you undertake a journey to Kaliakra. The natural and archaeological reserve is located on a rocky headland that reaches out into the sea for 2 km and from where you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view. Then you visit a working mussel farm and look forward to a special 5-course lunch menu with seafood. Admire the unique Balchik Palace and the accompanying botanical garden in the afternoon. Legend has it that Queen Marie of Romania was so enchanted by the nature of the town that she decided to have her summer residence built here. She gave strict orders: the construction of the villa must not destroy nature, but rather complement its beauty.
Today you are left to your own devices for the whole day. You can stroll along the promenade or relax on the beach with a book. No matter what you decide, Varna has a lot to offer.
Today you travel south to Nessebar. The old town of Nessebar was founded 3200 years ago on a picturesque peninsula and experienced Greek, Roman and Ottoman rule during its rich history. The entire old town of Nessebar is protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. After an organised tour you will have the opportunity to explore the romantic town on your own. Afterwards you will enjoy a wine tasting and sample local sausage and cheese products. Return to Varna.
After breakfast, transfer to Varna Airport, where you say goodbye to your local tour guide.
